Travel Alert: It's Safer Abroad

Latin America is diverse, though, and in today’s Southern Cone, political violence is almost unheard of, even if intemperate language between (and even within) opposing political factions is often the rule rather than the exception. It doesn’t help, though, when locals themselves, spurred by sensationalist coverage of gruesome but atypical crimes, exaggerate the issue of “insecurity” even if, statistically speaking, their chances of being a victim are miniscule.

Every city and country, of course, has bad neighborhoods, such as Buenos Aires’s so-called Fuerte Apache (actually just outside the city limits). Still, foreign visitors are unlikely to even see those neighborhoods except at a distance - they’ll be visiting tourist-friendly barrios such as Palermo, Recoleta and San Telmo instead. In remote areas such as Patagonia, serious crime is nearly non-existent.

As Steves implies, though, Southern Cone inhabitants might have more to worry about in visiting the United States. If 35-year-old Adolfo Ignacio Celedón of Santiago (his hometown's placid Parque Metropolitano is pictured above) had not traveled to this country, he would not have been shot to death by yet unknown assailants last September 18th in Berkeley, California - only a couple miles from my own home in Oakland - in the presence of his American fiancée. In the aftermath, San Francisco Chronicle reporter Henry K. Lee found himself inundated with requests from the Chilean media for information about the senseless killing, and the story made the front page in the Santiago daily La Nación.

One commentator on the article recalled another instance in which a “hateful racist” killed two vacationing Chileans and wounded three others in Florida in 2009. Another reader, charitably enough, countered that “assaults, robberies and other crimes take place everywhere, in every country.” Still, this provides some perspective on the often mistaken notion that staying home is safer than traveling.

Out of the closet and into the wine cellar?

Anyone who’s been to Buenos Aires since the political and economic meltdown of 2002 is aware that the city has become the top gay travel destination in all of South America, and one of the most important in the world. This week’s Economist provides a good summary of BA’s gay appeal, with its vigorous nightlife which include a gay milonga or tango dance club, Latin America’s most liberal domestic partnership laws, even the five – star “Hetero – Friendly” Axel Hotel on the edge of San Telmo.

Another of Argentina’s attractions, for all sexual orientations’ is the country’s wine. As far as I know, though Buenos Aires is the only city in the world with an openly Gay Wine Store, near Plaza San Martin in the upscale barrio of Retiro

Tired of Tango?

Apparently Mauricio Macri is, or at least the newly elected mayor of Buenos Aires is tired of the people who have run the highly successful Festival de Tango for most of the last ten years. One of his first actions on taking office was to fire those in charge of the festival, which normally follows Brazilian Carnaval in late summer (February or early March). The pugnacious Macri has been trying, with limited success, to rid city government of ñoquis (ghost employees whose primary duties are picking up their paychecks at month's end), and this may have been part of his long-term strategy.

After Macri's functionary Hernán Lombardi denied the festival would be suspended, he replaced the staff with his own people, who then shifted it to August to precede the annual Mundial de Tango (World Tango Championships). Together, the two will fill the last two weeks of August, but visitors who planned their trips around the February/March event will be disappointed. There's still plenty of tango, but nothing quite matches the festival's critical mass of talent, both musicians and dancers. It's possible that next year's event will return to its normal schedule.

Economically speaking, tango is a critical part of the tourist economy. According to a recent Reuters article, it brings in US$450 million year year, about ten percent of all entertainment spending in Buenos Aires, and the "tango economy" is growing 25 percent annually. Giant dinner clubs with tango shows, such as the Esquina Carlos Gardel, charge upwards of US$100 per person and are running full, even though few Argentines (other than the performers) go anywhere near them

I'm holding back the tears (-_-)

(~_~)
Last three day was the saddest thing that ever happens to me. My grandmother (on my father side) has gone forever. Now I don't know who I will confess my problem with. Me and my twin was really shock as family from my father side called us one day after my grandmother has passed away....which this make me feel really sad and wondering why they didn't tell us on the first place. Well their reason was everything was mess up and they're also shock.... (Yeah right...)

So I went there at my fathers place with my twin but the sad things are we  not be able to look at grandma for the last time.....and I will never forget what my grandmother told me when was a kid " there’s always obstacles ahead of your journey, but try to face it with dignity and confidently. Try not to show your tears in front of your enemy or you may look  weak! Back to the story, there we help all our relatives to prepare the food for the visitors and friends. I can't even talk because at the moment I was holding back the tears and my heart was really painful...

Some of my cousin tries to cheer me up but I end up crying until I got eye bags....Eww...

2 days later we came back from my father’s house and everything went back to normal (talk about man of habit...) as usual we greet our family (mother side) but I didn't saw my mom. Well I guest she's at work…Whatever.
At that night, when she came back from work she suddenly piss off and shout angrily toward me and my sister which that has never happen before!! She said that as if everything is our fault and told us that if you don't want to stay in the house we better we go back to your father's house a.s.a.p. FYI mom, what the hell is going on with you? We were just trying visiting your ex- mother in law who passed away two days ago. Is that wrong? It’s not like we went there and you think we straightly want to stay there for the rest of our live? HELL TO THE NO!

For the record even though you told to go to our father’s house, we will never go there because we are belong there, with you mom.... Thanks for telling us how stupid we are become your daughter... Now I realize how much you hate us compare to the other child, right? All the bad word you spread in front of my brothers and sisters really make me feel disappointed. If you like us to leave, we'll go. Fine by me. I'll quit college, find a work and be independent.

To tell you the truth mom, I sometimes hate it when you do that. Sometimes all the bad word you throw to us can be quiet offensive. I don’t think I could forgive you because of that…..it just too painful to accept. I guest reality was really are….. (Sigh).

There’s only one thing I want to express to you mom, please try control your temper and not to yell out loud in front of everybody. Have you ever thinking about our feeling when you said that? As a parent please try talk professionally as we are consider adult too NOT kids...(-_-)
